Printed Antenna Arrays with High Side Lobe Suppression: the Challenge of Design

The design of printed antenna arrays with high side lobe suppression has been analysed in this article. The parallel, perpendicular and corner reflectors have been investigated. The arrays are with symmetrical pentagonal dipoles as radiating elements operating at a second resonance. The symmetrical tapered feed network, which consists of impedance transformers, with Dolph-Chebyshev distribution of second order enables in theory side lobe suppression better than 44 dB at the frequency of 12 GHz in E-plane. Due to tolerances during fabrication of antenna array, the side lobe suppression of realized antenna will be less a few dB.
